The University of Strathclyde in wage docking threat

This is a method of protest by University teachers that has been used in Greece many times. If I remember correctly, the first time it happened was in 1987. I don’t agree with it because it affects the students. However, one has to admit that it is effective.

The University of Strathclyde has given senior staff licence to dock the salary of lecturers who fail to set exams by up to 30% over a three-week period. The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has instructed members not to draw up exam papers. David Blieman, of the AUT, described pay docking as a "provocative move" that would "exacerbate matters". A university spokeswoman said: "As yet, no steps have been taken to start deducting pay from staff." Talks aimed at settling the two-month pay dispute collapsed on Monday. To date, industrial action at the University of Strathclyde has led to the cancellation of 11 exams. A university spokesman said it would take "a cautious and pragmatic view to deducting pay given the fluid and changing nature of the industrial dispute". Mr Blieman said docking pay would make it "less likely" students would be able to sit exams. He added: "Once our members have had their pay docked for not setting or marking exams, there is no obligation on that employee to ever do that work again. "In the best interests of the students, universities should not deduct money from our members because they are going to need to cooperate with our members in putting things right for students as soon as this dispute can be settled." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/4757215.stm
